Understanding ADHD and Learning Disability

The workshop 'Understanding ADHD and Learning Disability' was held at Chetana Hospital, Minister's Road, Secunderabad. The facilitators were Ms. Shobhana Srivastava and Ms. Chhaya Sinha Goel.

The workshop dealt with explaining ADHD - meaning, its causes and types. We were also dealt with the presenting symptoms at different age groups - Preschool, school age, adolescent, young adult and adult, and developmental impact.

ADHD does not only impacts the school and occupational functioning of the individual but also affects peer relationships, family relationships, adult relationships and leisure activities. With ADHD come certain other co-morbid disorders which we learnt to identify.

Since all the participants were teachers, it was helpful when the classroom management techiques for these children were discussed.

Also discussed was the Special Learning Disabilities - dyslexia, discalculia and dyspraxia - their characteristics, intervention, methods to teaching these children.

On the whole, it was a great experience and we are glad to have been a part of the workshop.
