Perceiving the true meaning of Friendship

Oakridge International School, Einstein campus, Hyderabad, celebrated friendship day in a unique way. It invited the students of Grade levels 1-5 of “Chord”, a school for underprivileged children and drop outs, to visit the school and celebrate ‘International Friendship Day’ on August 9, 2011.

Around 40 children from each school participated in the event. The Founder President of Chord, Mr. Suman Malladi and his wife Mrs Malladi also accompanied the children as guests. The event started with a warm welcome by OIS children. They put tilak and garlanded each child from Chord. The Principal of OIS, Mrs. C. Adilakshmi extended a hearty welcome to each and every one in her welcome note.

The students of both the schools interacted, mingled and made friends with each other after which Mr. Malladi addressed the gathering about the activities of Chord. It was followed by colorful cultural activities which included song, dance and rhymes. The little ones from Chord also opened up soon and presented rhymes as well as joined OIS children on stage in dance performances.

Then they had a small break time where they relished snacks and got charged for games and art activities. The children were divided into three groups using color-n-shape grouping strategy. Then they were taken to three different rooms where they played few games like ‘save your balloon’, ‘make a pyramid’ and few one-minute games. They were also given choices to use paints, crayons, color pencils and scissors to make some art samples. The children came up with very beautiful and creative art works which they carried along with them.

The event concluded with vote of thanks and presentation of few gifts. The OIS children gave friendship cards which they prepared in advance. They also gave chocolates and balloons to their new buddies and took them for school tour. Overall it was a memorable experience for both the groups.
